There are a few ways you can file a claim for Social Security Disability benefits with the Social Security Administration (SSA). It is recommended that you read one of the Disability Starter Kits developed by the Social Security Administration before you apply.

You can apply for Social Security disability benefits in two different ways:
- Online at www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability(link is external)
- Through your local Social Security Administration (SSA) field office
- To locate the office nearest you, call 1-800-772-1213 toll-free, or visit the Social Security Office Locator and enter your five-digit ZIP Code.
After you have applied, Social Security staff will review your application with you to make sure it’s complete. If you meet the work and/or income related requirements, then SSA will forward your application to the Disability Determination Services so they can determine whether or not you meet the medical requirements.
